Santhal is a notable tribal art made by the tribes of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar. The theme of these scroll paintings revolves around community life and painted in muted shades. Learn about Santhal paintings through this DIY.

STEP 1 : Source the base material
  • Take a plywood plank measuring 9” x 6” approximately in size, for the figures to be mounted on, and 9” x 4” approximately for the nameplate.
  • Paint plywood cut outs for the nameplate with a base coat of Acrylic Colour - White 27.
  • Let it dry.
STEP 2 : Draw the design
  • Take an A4 White paper, draw the Santhal musicians on it with their musical instruments in the size of the plywood.
STEP 3 : Mix Fevicryl Mouldit
  • Take Mouldit - resin base and hardener, mix it thoroughly to form an even dough.
STEP 4 : Create the pattern
  • Roll it to make a medium slab with a rolling pin.
STEP 5 : Create the details
  • Trace the figures and the musical instruments on the slab, individually.
  • Cut along the outlines of the figures with a paper cutter.
  • Smoothen the edges for an even finishing using a little amount of talcum powder.
  • Let them dry.
STEP 6 : Paint the elements
  • Paint the figures with Acrylic Colours - Burnt Sienna, Black 02, Crimson 04, Lemon Yellow 11, Light Green 12, Orange 17, Sap Green 21, White 27, Ultramarine Blue 23, Sky Blue 63, Deep Brilliant Purple 64
  • Let them dry completely.
STEP 7 : Paint the design
  • Paint both the planks with the border and dots pattern with Acrylic Colours - Lemon Yellow 11, White 27, Sky Blue 63 and Deep Brilliant Purple 64.
  • Stick the figures on the plank with Fabric Glue. Let it dry.
  • Write the surname “Bose” on the plank with Acrylic Colour - Black 02.
  • Let it dry.
  • Attach both the nameplates to each other with jute yarn along with the wooden beads.
