Phulkari Toran
You Will Need:
Fevicryl 3D Outliner Light Green 704, White 707, Neon Orange 711, Neon Pink 712, Fevicryl 3D Outliner Pearl Metallic Gold 352, Fevicryl Fabric Glue, Fine Art Canvas Sheet, Half A Meter Red Fabric, Scissors, A4 White Paper, White Carbon Paper, Pencil, Colourful Pom-poms, Needle and Thread, Assorted Mirrors.

Phulkari refers to the folk embroidery of the Punjab. Although Phulkari means floral work, the designs include not only flowers but also cover motifs and geometrical shapes. The main characteristics of Phulkari embroidery are the use of darn stitch on the wrong side of coarse cotton cloth with coloured silken thread. We have tried replicating the same using 3D outliners.
STEP 1 : Source the base material
- Take plain half a meter red colour fabric.
- We are going to make the toran for the festival of Lohri using fabric and 3D outliners.
STEP 2 : Draw and trace the design.
- Take A4 white paper to draw the border design inspired from the Phulkari Embroidery from Punjab.
- Take the red colour fabric mark and cut the broad strip measuring 7” x 36” in size.
- Trace the same design on the fabric strip with white carbon paper.
STEP 3 : Paint the design
- Paint the Phulkari pattern by replicating the original embroidery using 3D Outliner Light Green 704, White 707, Neon Orange 711, Neon Pink 712 and Pearl Metallic Gold 352.
- Let it dry.
STEP 4 : Finishing touches
- Take the canvas sheet mark and cut the strip measuring 4” x 36” in size.
- Stick the canvas strip on the rear side of the painted fabric to make it sturdy using Fabric Glue.
- Fold the edges to make the finishing. Let it dry.
- Cover the canvas with extra red fabric using Fabric Glue. Let it dry.
STEP 5 : Make the Latkans
- Take the red fabric mark and cut the square approximately 3” x 3” in size.
- Trace a similar square design on it.
- Paint the design with 3D Outliner Light Green 704, White 707, Neon Orange 711, Neon Pink 712 and Pearl Metallic Gold 352. Let it dry.
- Mark and cut the square pieces from the canvas sheet.
- Stick the canvas piece on the rear side using Fabric Glue. Let it dry.
- Make the finishing touches on each piece.
STEP 6 : Final touches
- Attach the square pieces to the broad strip of the toran using Needle and thread.
- Attach the colourful pom-poms towards the ends of the square shape with needle and thread.
STEP 7 : Final look
- Your toran with phulkari will look like this.
