Open Weave Tote Bag

You Will Need:

Fevicryl Fabric Glue Premium, Paper, Pencil, Fabric Chalk/ Colour Pencil, Scale, Scissors, Cutter, Cutting Mat, Buckram, Casement Fabric, Cotton Fabric (Yellow Ochre, Dark Brown Bandhani Fabric), Faux Leather/Rexin (Red, Black)

Here is an amazing DIY of an open weave tote bag with leather strips that has been made using Fevicryl Fabric Glue.

STEP 1 : Source the base material
  • Take buckram, casement fabric, cotton fabric (Yellow Ochre, Dark Brown Bandhani Fabric) And Faux Leather/Rexin (Red, Black) pieces as shown.
STEP 2 : Cutting the strips
  • Cut the leather and fabrics in to strips as shown in the image.
  • Each strip will measure 0.5”. 
STEP 3 : Create a frame
  • Take buckram and cut strips out of it.
  • Stick the strips as seen in the image to create a rectangular structure.
  • The frame will measure 16.5”x 12”
  • The size of the horizontal strips will be 1” and vertical strips will be 0.75”
STEP 4 : Open weave sticking
  • Take the strips and create an open weave structure as shown in the image.
  • Stick the sides to the buckram frame using fevicryl fabric glue premium.
  • Let it dry.
  • Create 2 such frames.
  • Make sure to leave 1” between each strip horizontally and 1.5” between each strip vertically.
STEP 5 : Create buckram frames
  • Create buckram frames for the sides of the bag as shown in the image.
  • The size would be 12” x 5”
  • Take fabric strips and create an open weave pattern as shown in the image
  • Stick it using Fevicryl Fabric Glue Premium.
  • Let it dry.
STEP 6 : Base of the bag
  • Take buckram fabric and cut a piece measuring 18.5” x 7”
  • 1" on sides will be used for folding.
STEP 7 : Fabric for base
  • Take bandhini fabric for the base as shown in the image.
  • Stick a layer of buckram measuring 16.5 x 5 on the base to make it more sturdy.
STEP 8 : Sticking of fabric
  • Stick the bandhini fabric on to the buckram base as shown.
  • Stick it using Fevicryl Fabric Glue Premium.
  • Let it dry.
  • Cut the edges as shown to help create neat corners.
STEP 9 : Sticking of corners
  • Fold the corners and stick them as shown in the image.
  • Stick them using Fevicryl Fabric Glue Premium.
  • Let it dry.
STEP 10 : Side edges
  • Take buckram + casement and cut strips for the side edges of the bag.
  • The strips will measure about 1.5”x12”.
  • Fold them in the middle as seen in the image.
STEP 11 : Covering of the strips
  • Cover the side edges with bandhini fabric measuring 2.5” x 13”.
  • 0.5” will be used for folding on all sides.
  • Stick them using Fevicryl Fabric Glue Premium.
  • Let it dry.
STEP 12 : Attach the side edges
  • Attach the side edges to the base as shown in the image.
  • Stick them using Fevicryl Fabric Glue Premium.
  • Let it dry.
STEP 13 : Bottom base
  • Take black leather and cut a piece out of it as shown in the image.
  • The piece will measure 7.5” x 19.5”.
STEP 14 : Sticking the open weave sides
  • Take the sides created and stick them as shown in the image.
  • Stick them using Fevicryl Fabric Glue Premium.
  • Let it dry well.
STEP 15 : Covering for top part
  • Take black leather and cut 2 long pieces measuring 16” x 1.5”
  • Cut 2 smaller pieces measuring 3” x 1.5”
STEP 16 : Creating handles
  • Cut 2 black leather strips measuring
  • Stick buckram measuring 0.5” on the edges to help them stick better on to the bag.
  • Stick them using Fevicryl Fabric Glue Premium.
  • Let it dry well.
STEP 17 : Top part of the bag
  • Take the strips cut for the top part and make 2 slits in them as seen in the image.
  • Use cutter to make the slits.
  • Insert the handle piece into the slit as shown in the image.
  • Stick them using Fevicryl Fabric Glue Premium.
  • Let it dry well.
STEP 18 : Sticking of the top part
  • Stick the top part of the bag as shown in the image.
  • Stick them using Fevicryl Fabric Glue Premium.
  • Let it dry well.
  • Secure them with extra clips till it dries to avoid them from opening up as the pieces are very long and the bag is a bit flimsy.
STEP 19 : Strips for the corner sides
  • Cut out 4 black leather strips for the sides as seen in the image measuring 2” x 13”.
  • 1” extra should be left on the top for folding.  
STEP 20 : Sticking of strips
  • Stick the strips on to the side as shown in the image.
  • Stick them using Fevicryl Fabric Glue Premium.
  • Let it dry well.
STEP 21 : Final look

The open weave tote bag is ready to be carried around for your brunches or during your casual weekend shopping .
