Description :

Paper quilling, one of the most famous and liked paper crafts amongst kids and adults alike. Taking inspiration from this very craft, we have moulded clay strips to form them like paper quills, to be decorated in a pattern around a mirror. A technique that can be adapted on so many other surfaces to enhance them.

STEP 1 : Source the base material

Take a round MDF ring 12” in diameter.

STEP 2 : Paint the base

Paint the ring with a base coat of Fevicryl Acrylic Colour – White 27. Let it dry.

STEP 3 : Paint the ring

Paint using Fevicryl Acrylic Colour - Salmon Pink 65. Let it dry.

STEP 4 : Preparing the clay dough

Take Fevicryl Mouldit – resin base & hardener, mix well to make a soft even dough.

STEP 5 : Colouring the dough

Add Acrylic Colours to the prepared dough and make several small portions out of it. This would be required to make the varied shapes for the clay quills.

STEP 6 : Shaping into quill forms

Make clay strips of 1cm thick using a paper cutter and start shaping them into varied quilling forms and shapes like leaf shape, tear drop shape etc. Refer to the image.

STEP 7 : Start developing the pattern

With each quilled form and shape start developing a pattern within the ring, sticking as you go along with Fevicryl Fabric Glue. Ensure there is a rhythm and flow in the pattern that you are creating.

STEP 8

Once all the clay quilled shapes are stuck it would look like this. Pretty with dainty formations and ever so colourful. Let it dry.

STEP 9 : Creating clay flowers

Take some clay dough and form 5 petalled flowers. Make about 7 – 10 such flowers.

STEP 10

Stick them aesthetically in between your pattern formation using Fabric Glue.

STEP 11 : Sticking the mirror and final touches

Stick a mirror from the rear side of the ring and fix a hook attachment for the mirror. Your clay quilled mirror is now ready to be placed in a special nook.
