Dokra Art Flowerpots

You Will Need:

Dokra art is prevalent and predominant in India. This work of art requires skill and craftsmanship. Taking inspiration from this comes our DIY that has Dokra art pots with figures created using Fevicryl Mouldit and terracotta diyas painted in rich metallic shades.   

STEP 1 : Source the base material

We are going to make the small flowerpot inspired from the Dokra art using terracotta diya and Mouldit. Take 2 prewashed terracotta diyas.

STEP 2 : Prepare the dough / clay

Take Fevicryl Mouldit – resin base & hardener, mix well to form an even soft dough.  

STEP 3 : Clay slab technique

Take the dough, roll it to make a  medium thick slab with rolling pin.

STEP 4 : Building the flower pot

Cover the diya with the slab using Fabric Glue for sticking. Let it dry. Similarly take out the mould from the base of another diya to cover the upper side, further, to shape it like the pot. Refer to the image.

STEP 5 : Finishing of the flower pot

Stick the upper side mouldit on the diya base using Fabric Glue. Let it dry. Mark and cut small strip from the slab to cover the joint of the pot using Fabric Glue. Let it dry. Refer to the image.

STEP 6 : Prepare to make the figures

Mark and cut the Dokra art style figures from the slab. Refer to the image. Place the figures on the bottle or on the round surface to give the curvature shape.

STEP 7 : Sticking the slab figures

After drying remove the figures from the bottle, you will get to see the curvature of the shape. Stick these figures on one side of the small flowerpot using little amount of the clay and Fabric Glue. Let it dry. take some clay to make the ornaments and the neck area. Use clay carving tools or a paper cutter for ease. Let it dry. Refer to the image.

STEP 8 : Painting the figures and pot

Paint the pot and the figures with antique metal look using Fevicryl Acrylic Colours Black 02 and Fevicryl Acrylic Colour Pearl Metallic Gold 352. Let it dry.

STEP 9 : Final Look
